New Renaissance Review of Fire from the Cauldron

The latest issue of New Renaissance’s newsletter features Shon Clark’s Fire from the Cauldron. I’m excited about this book because it’s the first book I edited for Megalithica Books/Immanion Press.

In this review, I gave some tidbits about what makes this book so important and special. Click here to go read it online. Thanks Erin Donley for allowing me to lend my voice to the review.

DIYP Article Up: Review of the Quo Vadis Habana Notebook

This week, I wrote my thoughts on the Quo Vadis Habana notebook. Not only does it make a sturdy companion for writing your thoughts, it also is a comparable replacement for a Moleskine. Go read my review and see what else I had to say.

Two RAVENS Reviews and a Concert

Reviews of RAVENS keep trickling in. I’ve seen two more this week. One by LiveJournal user mavrick_weirdo and another by Jennifer Brozek. You should go visit their blogs and see what they had to say about the book.

In other news, s00j and Cathrynne Valente are here in Portland. They’re doing a Palimpsest Release Concert tonight at the Camellia Lounge, 510 NW 11th Ave, Portland, OR 97209 ($10 suggested donation; this venue is 21+ after 8pm). I think all Portlanders should go check it out. I know I am.

First RAVENS Review

k_crow, over at LiveJournal, posted this wonderful review of RAVENS IN THE LIBRARY. The review details each story by itself, so beware of spoilers to those of you who have yet to read your copy. I especially liked what she said about my story. (Does this mean I’m a bit biased?)

DIYP Article Up: Review of Tagging

This week, I reviewed Tagging: People-Powerd Metadata for the Social Web. Not an easy review for me. I received the book last November and took me awhile to get through. It was a good read but a bit TOO technical for me. You should go read my review and find out why.

Coraline in 3-D

We went to see Coraline last night at Cinetopia with friends. It was everything I hoped it would be and more. I loved the art direction and the style–it was all very reminiscent Tim Burton, without being a total copycat. And while there were changes to the storyline (yay for movie translations), the changes that were made didn’t take away from the original novel. The movie was made here in Portland, by LAIKA, an animation/design company founded by Phil Knight (of Nike fame).

I was a bit nervous about the 3-D technology at first. Usually 3-D movies are totally weirded out and “in your face” so much that it makes the movie experience more surreal than enjoyable. However, I was pleasantly surprised to see that Coraline’s use of the technology helped add to the dream-like atmosphere. It gave the animations and backdrops a depth that helped the movie.

If you like animations, a good story, then go watch this film. Pay full price and help support LAIKA.

DIYP Article Up: Review of Power of Less

I reviewed Leo Babauta’s (of ZenHabits fame) new book, The Power of Less, at DIY Planner.com. It’s a quick read and got my recommendation. You should go read the review and see why I recommend it.
