Come to Life

It was late and Jill was still in her studio. The painting she was commissioned for seemed uninspiring– flat and stale. It was due in the morning and she felt pressured into creating a masterpiece in only a few hours.

Jill stared at the colors as they started to swirl and bleed into one another. A small dot, far off in the distance, grew larger and larger. It got bigger and more body-like and then grew arms and legs. She blinked and rubbed her eyes as the figure bent down off canvas, as if it were looking for some unseen item.

Jill gasped as the water hit her face. It jolted her mind awake and shocked her. It was just the right thing to convince her to finish the painting, however.

Threading a Needle

The sand, now cooled from the evening air, feels rough against my feet. Salty sea spray washes over me as the clouds roll across the sky. The last sliver of sunlight dips down over the horizon, casting an bright white light beacon. I think about how it looks like a bright and silver needle, laying flat against the blue haystack of the ocean.

The Floating Castle

Hues of red, pink, orange, and silver spread far and wide across the pearl white, smooth walls rising from the clouds. In the floating castle, handmaidens weave the dreams of the children below into rich tapestries that get sold on each Monday during the Goblin Market.

The Lockpick

Shimmering wings flapped furiously as the tiny sprite pushed its long arm deep into the keyhole. The copper lock was old and warn, but still clamped shut as if it were new. Her fingers squirmed and wrapped delicately around each mechanism, looking for the right way to convince them to fall. Finally, after several attempts, the satisfying sound of freedom came and the door slide open without a sound. A gentle push later and she was free, leaving only a small trail of dust that hung in the air. The only clue that she had been there.

Only I Notice

Frost lays on the ground, a blanket covering the grass. The sun rises just barely over the horizon, stretching warm rays across the street. My breath hangs in the cool air as I walk past the giant oak trees. A single, brown leaf falls freely from a dead, brown branch.

I know that fall has finally arrived.

Broken Silence

Jordan ran through the tightly packed crowds. She squished her purse against her panicked chest. A small glint of slivery light caught in the sun. She pushed through a small group of people just as she heard a loud boom sound behind her.

A small bejeweled skull rolled out from her purse and onto the gravel. Blood poured from the body, betrayed only by the crystal reflection in the skull’s eye sockets.

The Meeting

The Queen of Cups held her hands over her eyes as she slumbered down the street. It had been one of those days where she couldn’t find the silver lining to be grateful at all. The Ace of Swords, carefully weighed all options before entering the sidewalk at the same time as the always moody Queen. He winked at her, as their eyes met, and for a split second, a smile flickered behind her stormy eyes.

All’s Not So Quiet on the Beach

Sam looked in the waves that were recessing into the ocean. His pointy ears rose over the small tufts of hair growing on his head. Grey smoke rose from a patch of baldness where a long ponytail lock of hair used to be only a few minutes ago. The cannon, now laying in ruins behind him, lit up the night sky clearly as if it were daytime.

A Story About the Vent

The vent in the floor is white and speckled with dust. When I come home and decompress from all the stress and events of my day, it whistles cheerfully as the heater turns it on. It’s almost as if it is yet another pet welcoming me home. Waiting for me to pay attention to it.
