The Empress

A warm ray of sunshine woke Lexi up. She slowly and purposefully stretched her leg out and let a long sound of a sigh emit from her mouth. She continued to lay in her futon for a while more as the warmth of the sun attempted to coax her back into a sleeping state of being. A small white hand reached out from the covers and flexed around a bit. Her left hand fell asleep some time ago and now she was attempting to get all the blood to flow back to the tips of her fingertips.

Her outstretched middle finger brushed against something cold and slick. Lexi turned her head to the left and realized that she had not put away her tarot deck from the night before. Panic gave way to fear as she hoped that she has not crushed or bent her brand new cards in any way. Her personal belongings were always prized treasures, she had an aversion to ripping things out of the box right away and destroying them several hours after she had just purchased the item. Quickly, she sat up and grabbed the deck carefully. She held the cards in close proximity to her face and slowly inspected their edges and made sure that none of the corners had not been bent or folded and there was no crease in the cards.

As she inspected the cards however, she noticed something rather peculiar. When she was playing with the cards the night before, she attempted to keep the deck in order with the zero card, The Fool, on top of the deck. However, when she looked at the bottom of the deck this time the Seven of Rocks appeared on top of the deck. Other than that card and the The Fool being switched, there were no other cards out of place.

"That is weird," she began, "I do not recall having seen this card last nite and I really am sure that I kept The Fool card on top. Huh, who knows, maybe I did end up swapping a few cards while I was sleeping." She looked closer at the card. The image of the Seven of Rocks had a mottled sea green color marbled in with some blacks and dark blues. A image of a tree with grey fruit hanging down from red ribbons. Will-o-wisps floated in and around the tree in the air and beneath the tree sat 3 fluffy and white rams with brown and gold rippled and ridged horns. Intrigued by the card and the fact that it was the first card to apper in order for the day, she bent down to retreive the book on tarot from the nearest stack of books on her floor. She quickly searched through the book for the pages that revealed her some information on the card that she had gently sat down in her lap. The pages made a swift flip, flip, flip sound as she shuffled through the book. After a few minutes she finally got to a page that displayed the words Seven of Coins on it. A picture of another style of the card sat on the right side of the page next to a table layout of words and correspondeces gave a quick and almost un-intelligable snapshot of what this card meant.

Lexi figured that had she known more about magick and wicca that the information in the table would be of great importance to her. But at the moment, all she wanted to know briefly was what the card meant and maybe why the reason it had somehow swapped positions. Picking up the card and holding it in her hand she sat it next to the open book in her lap. Apparently, from what the book was saying, the card reflected situations regarding inward reflection, assessmemt, evaluation, and reevaluation. She sat and stared at the card a bit more, trying to see how the card and the meanings interconnected.

"Huh," she thought, "when I see this card, I really do not get that connection. How do they get that meaning out of all those symbols. It just does not make much sense to me that a tree, with stone fruits and a few animals, lambs, and some will-o-wisps and all the colors could actually mean some sort of evaluation or reflection. Maybe I am just not cut out for all this and maybe I should not even think about adding the concepts of tarot and symbolism and personal meaning into my dissertation. Who knows, maybe even thinking that a stupid pack of cards could actually help me improve my life was a really insane and dumb idea anyways."

The book made a resounding thump as she set it back down on the pile. Lexi looked around her apartment and wondred what time it was. "I think I have wasted enough time today devling into these cards. I should really focus on my primary studies and then maybe play around more with these cards." She replaced the card back into the deck and straightened out the order of the cadrs so that the Seven of Rocks sat between the Six and the Eight and The Fool once again stared at her. Then she slipped the cards back into their box and then set that inside a small side pocket in her backpack. Even though she decided not to really play with them much during the day she figured that carrying them and the book around would not do any harm. She could always play with them during any breaks she had at work or between classes. And who knows, keeping them together may also help add and infuse her power and energy in with the cards themselves. Lexi knew it sounded silly but she hoped that if there was power and her energy did get infused, that she could maybe learn the cards better.

The clock on her stove read eleven o'clock. Lexi blinked at the clock and scratched her head, she was not sure what she was going to do during the day except to maybe read a few more books and take more notes for her dissertation. She grabbed the teapot off the counter and filled it with water and then turned on the stove. "Time for the morning chai," she said outloud to no one in particular.

On her way back around to her bed, she grabbed the remote control for her MP3 stereo player. A bight blue glow blinked out from the grey screen. The sounds of Montigo Bay started fill in the silence of her room as the water began to boil. The noon-day sun started to warm the room up from the big bay window that sat above her bed. Lexi stretched and took her large cup of tea over to the bed again. It was time to hit the books. She had just pulled out a rather larege tome on Native American History when her cell phone started to ring. Her ringtone of Technologic started blaring out from inside her bag. Lexi quickly unvelcro'd the Badtz Maru pouch from its case and pulled the phone out. She read the name and sighed, it was Claudia. She took a deep breath and clicked the OK button to receive.

"Good morning Claudia," she said, "Wassup?"
