New Renaissance Review of Fire from the Cauldron

The latest issue of New Renaissance’s newsletter features Shon Clark’s Fire from the Cauldron. I’m excited about this book because it’s the first book I edited for Megalithica Books/Immanion Press.

In this review, I gave some tidbits about what makes this book so important and special. Click here to go read it online. Thanks Erin Donley for allowing me to lend my voice to the review.

Perusing the Shelves

I was poking around on a website called Shelfari and found that they took pictures of Neil Gaiman’s library. Other author’s writing spaces and libraries fascinate me, so of course I gotta check out those images through to see what he keeps on his shelves.

I start clicking on the thumb nails to expand the images to their large size. That’s when I come across this:

I can’t believe I just did that…

Amazon.com makes it really easy for you to create tons of new wishlists. Over the past months, I’ve accidentally created several new lists while thinking I was telling their system to just display my one and only wishlist. Today I decided to delete those empty lists (I like running a clean social network).

Well, I thought I clicked on the first of 3 empty lists… and then… realized to my horror… that the first thing that got deleted was my SIX FREEKING PAGE amazon wishlist that I had since 2000 or so. Everything gone. Never to return.

Needless to say, I now have a clean slate to fill. Anyone got any pagan, tarot, paper arts, young adult, fantasy/scifi, or horror books, DVDs, or industrial/techno CDs you’d like to recommend? Comment away and I’ll link them up to my new “Massiv Wish List”. This is your chance to help influence my book habit in 2009.

A Quiet Sunday Spent Reading

Kender’s snowboarding on Mt. Hood today. Which means I get a nice day to myself. Slept in late, thanks to the new curtains that block out all the light. On awaking, I decided to plunge in and finish Inkdeath, the last book in a trilogy by Cornelia Funke. Imagine the ability to read things in and out of books and then figuring out how to read yourself into the story. That’s the premise to this series. Indeath wraps up the stories and gives all the characters a fitting end. (Although I get the impression that maybe… just maybe… more can be written about this world.)

2008 in Books

This post was totally inspired (ripped off) by Jenn. Earlier this year she introduced me to GoodReads, a site dedicated to books and reviews. It’s been a long standing desire of mine to somehow record and keep a catalog of all the books I’ve owned and read. Many of the books in my montage have reviews associated with them.

Therefore, for those curious about my reading habits: what I read and how many I go through, here’s an incomplete listing of all the books I read (owned and borrowed from the library) in 2008. I love how the covers look. Yet, I look at the montage and feel that I read A LOT more. Fifty-four books in one year seems a bit… light to me. I’m hoping that I’ll be able to keep better track of all the books I’ve read as well as getting all the books I own into the GoodReads system.

Review: Wabi Sabi for Writers

This review was originally written for DIYPlanner.com in 2006. I’m reposting it here to generate more interest.

Written by Richard Powell
Published by Adams Media
ISBN 1593375964

I was at one of my favorite book stores which also catered to the new age crowd a week ago. My friend, corie was in town and wanted me to drag her to all the hot-spots in Portland. She’s also a book freak and she must have purchased about 10 books on a shoe string budget during her stay here. We wandered in and out of the aisles looking at all the books, and knick-knacks when my eyes ran across Wabi Sabi for Writers, by Richard Powell. I also have on my shelf (and started to read a long time ago, but never finished) his other book, Wabi Sabi Simple. I was amused and amazed that here was a book on a subject that I am growing more and more interested in, encapsulated inside a well written, personal account on writing.

Review: No Plot, No Problem

This review was originally written for DIYPlanner.com in 2006. I’m reposting it here to generate more interest.

Written by Chip Baty
Published by Chronicle Books
ISBN 0811845052

Before any of you can ask me, yes I finished today’s NaNoWriMo word count with 2502. Which leaves me with a perfect segue-way into my first review for November is D*I*Y Planner Review Month or DIYPlaRevMo. *ahem* Okay, sorry… I’ll try and refrain from the jokes. But it should come as no surprise that the first book I’m reviewing this month is Chris Baty’s No Plot? No Problem!. Not only is the book a wonderful companion to this month’s NaNoWriMo excursion but it’s also a great stand alone writing book.

Book: Gemstone Feng Shui

By Sandra Kynes
Llewellyn Worldwide
ISBN 0-7387-0219-6

Gemstones and feng shui; the marriage between the two isn’t as apparent as it should be. However, stones and their energies are a perfect companion to the ancient Chinese practice. Sandra Kynes’s book, Gemstone Feng Shui, explores this complex and interesting relationship. I imagined a whole system of feng shui that used gemstones to counter and support the natural energies of feng shui. While the book has a wealth of information on how to use crystals in conjunction with traditional feng shui practices it fell short of that first impression. Instead the book attempts to describe how to use the stones with current good feng shui practices.
